SHOULD I TAKE ONLY BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES?
Despite celebrity testimonials touting scientifically unfounded benefits of
compounded bioidentical hormones, the bottom line is that most have not
undergone rigorous clinical testing for safety or efficacy, nor are they
approved by the FDA. The FDA is warning compounding pharmacies not to make
unfounded claims for increased safety, effectiveness and benefit.
That being said, many FDA approved hormones ARE bioidentical and come from
plants. All estradiol products (Estrace, Vivelle, Estraderm, Divigel, Estrasorb,
Evamist) and the progesterone Prometrium are bioidentical and of plant origin.
SHOULD I GET MY HORMONES TESTED?
Salivary and blood hormone testing are usuallu not necessary or helpful. The
range of normal values is great, with estradiol levels possible from 30 to 500
in a premenopausal woman! Fluctuation of hormone levels over the course of even
one day can be very dramatic. Also, hormones can changed into other hormones,
and back again! A woman's symptoms are treated, not the blood test or the saliva
test result.
