Margaret Craig is an obstetrician-gynecologist in Walnut
Creek, California. She has delivered approximately 6000
babies in her professional career, first as a
nurse-midwife and then as an obstetrician-gynecologist.
Dr. Craig graduated from Yale University School of
Nursing Master’s program in nurse-midwifery in 1970,
after she completed her Baccalaureate nursing degree at
the University of Michigan. She then worked as staff
nurse-midwife with the Maternal and Infant Care-Family
Planning Project at Brookdale Medical Center and
Brownsville’s Clinic in Brooklyn, New York, before
demonstrating the role of a nurse-midwife in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, in 1972-1973, prior to the enactment of the
modern nurse-midwifery law in that state. After
graduating from the University of Michigan School of
Medicine, Dr. Craig completed her OB/GYN residency at
Wayne State University in Detroit. During her residency,
she assisted in the establishment of the first
nurse-midwifery service at Hutzel Hospital, Detroit,
Michigan, in 1980. Dr. Craig then joined the staff and
later became chairman of the OB/GYN Department at
Rockridge Health Plan , a pioneering health maintainence
organization in Oakland, California, that served a
high-risk Medicaid population. The department grew to
eight obstetricians and nurse-midwives who delivered
sixty women each month. Dr. Craig also was a founder and
president of Women’s Health Care, Inc., a corporation of
nurse-midwives and obstetrician-gynecologists devoted to
providing quality obstetric care to the women of the
diverse populations in Oakland and Berkeley, California.
She has been in Walnut Creek since 1990.
Dr. Craig has been an active volunteer, serving on the
Board of the American College of Nurse-Midwives
Foundation, the Board of Directors of the AIDS Project
of the East Bay, and the Board of Directors of the
Oakland YWCA. In 1996, she was awarded fellowship in the
American College of Nurse-Midwives. In January 2001, she
was chosen by bay area doctors, nurses, and hospital
administrators as one of the “500 Top Doctors in the San
Francisco Bay Area”. In 2007, Dr. Craig was honored as a
“Top OB/GYN” by the Consumers’ Research Council of
America in the Guide to America’s Top Gynecologists and
Obstetricians. Dr. Craig is a member of the San
Francisco Gynecological Society, and she is a past
president of the East Bay Gynecological Society and past
chairman of the OB/GYN Department at John Muir Medical
Center in Walnut Creek.
